IN THE BLOOD

Dan Trnka, 34, idolized truckers and big rigs from the time he was in high school. But instead of chasing the dream of the open road after graduation, he got a well-paying job as a mechanic at a local repair shop. The problem? Complete and utter boredom. "When you're in a shop, you're doing the same thing every day," he says. "You sign in for work, work on a car or truck, and then go home. You get stuck in a rut." Drawn by the excitement of going to new places and experiencing different things, he hopped in the shotgun seat beside a buddy who was driving long-haul - and was instantly hooked.

"I took the driver's training and immediately went on the road," he says. "I've been doing it for nine years, and I can't see myself ever doing anything else again." Trnka spent the first five years of his second career running long-haul routes, but he's now a local driver around his hometown of Winnipeg, where he can be close to his wife and two daughters. "It's all about family life now," he explains. "You put up with a lot more traffic on a daily basis and have tougher timelines, but I get to be home every night and weekend, and get my kids on the school bus every day."

One of Trnka's proudest accomplishments from his days of driving long-haul is that he has been able to visit every state in the U.S. and every Canadian province. But sightseeing isn't his favorite part of the job. It's the kinship he feels with other drivers. "There's an unwritten brotherhood and sisterhood between drivers on the road," he says. "You're always talking, and if you get lost, it never fails to go to channel 19 and ask a local for directions."

FOUR FUEL FACTS

Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT) Founder Royal Jones on Maximizing Mileage

1. Slide the fifth wheel forward
"So many drivers slip the fifth wheel back because they think [the truck] rides better that way," explains Jones. "It doesn't." Sliding it forward narrows the gap between tractor and trailer, reducing aerodynamic drag.

2. Drivers love incentives
The real secret, Jones says, is instituting creative incentive programs that make drivers want to get steller fuel economy. Every quarter at MVT the top mpg performers gets the keys to a brand-new motorcycle.

3. Slow and steady
Jones sets his engines to max out at 65 mph, and teaches his drivers to respect the truck's power. "It's all about technique," he says. "You don't need to have the pedal to the ground. Drive the truck like you want it to last forever."

4. Track your progress
MVT relies on onboard recorders from PeopleNet to give managers a constant stream of onboard behavior. By monitoring everything from idle time to hard stops, the company works to hone drivers' fuel efficiency.

GOING LOCAL

Manhattan Beer's VP of Craft Beer Rob Mitchell spills on his three favorite brews.

Southampton Burton
Mitchell loves the authentic English-style amber ale because it's "more balanced and less hoppy" than the big IPAs coming from the West Coast. "Plus, it pairs great with food."

Kelso Nut Brown Lager
Brooklyn's finest is a delicious dark lager "with crisp smoothness that's highly refreshing," says Mitchell. But it also has "enough unique character to make it intriguing to a variety of palates."

Keegan Ales Mother's Milk
As the name implies, this Hudson Valley brewery produces a creamy stout with hints of oatmeal, chocolate malt and, of course, milk. "It's beautiful with roasted meats. And really great with desserts," say Mitchell
