DOWN BY THE BAY

AN OYSTER FARMER GETS THE MOST OUT OF AN OLD FLEET OF INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER.
BY: MIKE HAMMER

On the rugged northwest shore of Tasmania (perhaps better known as the tiny island at the bottom of Australia), an old fleet of International trucks is excelling in a unique application: towing and launching oyster barges. Jon Poke has built one of the largest oyster-farming operations in his part of the world, and he says that his fleet of Internationals has more than pulled its weight in getting him there.

"There've been quite a few reasons for our success," says the owner and manager of Bolduans Bay Oysters, located on the banks of the Duck River in the tiny town of Smithton. "But our Internationals have been a big part of it."

Poke runs a fleet of six International trucks that includes four six-cylinder D1610 4WDs, a D1610 4WD with a 6-354 Perkins engine, a C1500 Dual Cab V-8 petrol truck with gas conversion, and a D1510 TWD with a V-8. Each is called upon to launch and pull in barges that can weigh between six and 10 tons when fully loaded.

The six trucks have done more than their share of heavy hauling since Poke opened the operation back in 1979. Today the 202-acre farm has an oyster stock on hand that ranges between 12 million and 16 million, with a record production of up to 2.16 million fully mature oysters (180,000 dozen) in a single year. Next year's target goal is an incredible 7.5 million (625,000 dozen). The farm also produces 25% of Tasmania's juvenile or spat oysters that are passed on to other farmers for further growing.

"We've had other models, and while they served us well, they did not have the durability of the Internationals," Poke explains. "International is a simpler build and much easier for us to maintain in our own workshop to keep them on the job. They've been faithful companions that just keep us rolling without any hassles."

TERRASTAR: NOW IN 4X4

THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS TO CLIMB ON BOARD THE NEW TERRASTAR® 4X4. HERE ARE FOUR (OF COURSE).
BY: MIKE HAMMER

If you want to keep your business humming, there's no point in investing in a truck that comes up short when the demands are big. That's why the new International TerraStar 4x4 adds up to huge returns for commercial-duty business owners looking for a solution to day-to-day challenges.

The latest generation of International's classic Class 4/5 work truck is easy to operate, built with commercial-duty components, and powered by Navistar's 7 liter, 300-hp engine, which is both reliable and fuel efficient.

SPACIOUS CAB
The TerraStar® 4X4 offers 11" more headroom and is 9" wider than its closest competitor, making it the largest cab in its class with unequaled visibility. That adds up to improved safety, easier operation and better passenger comfort.

AWESOME AXLE
8,000-lb. Dana Axles provide durability and reliability to keep the TerraStar® 4x4 moving. And four-wheel disc brakes help keep you safe as you're on the way to the next job site.

TOP TRANSFER CASE
The convenience of front axle shift on the fly allows for a rapid response to shifting terrain, while the 2-speed, low range gear offers better off-road mobility. This means less worry for owners when compared with the limited life characteristics of light-truck chain drive transfer cases.

ROCK-SOLID RAILS
Best-in-class 80,000 PSI frame rails are designed with commercial business in mind. They allow for solid mounting and reduced frame flex, and are the ultimate in strength and durability.
